E-commerce mobile ergonomics: converting on smartphone and tablet

Over 60% of online purchases start on mobile. Catalog, cart and checkout must be designed for the finger, not adapted as an afterthought.

Key takeaways
  • Poor mobile ergonomics costs 20 to 30% of conversion
  • The mobile checkout funnel must fit in 3 steps maximum, in a single column
  • A site that takes more than 3 seconds to load loses 40% of mobile visitors

Simplifying catalog navigation

Reduce your category depth (2 to 3 levels maximum), use a burger menu and slide-in panel filters rather than a side column, and keep a search bar accessible at all times.

Every product thumbnail must remain easily tappable with a finger (48px minimum), with title and price readable without zooming.

Product page and cart designed for the thumb

An image carousel rather than a grid, title/price/variants visible without scrolling, a large and contrasted add-to-cart button: the essentials must fit within the first screen.

In the cart, favor large +/- buttons, a swipe gesture to remove an item, and a clearly visible total including tax followed by a dominant checkout button.

A frictionless checkout funnel

Limit the funnel to 3 steps, one column of fields at a time, with the right keyboard types (numeric for phone, email for the address) and guest checkout offered by default.

Offer Apple Pay and Google Pay first on mobile: they eliminate manual entry and significantly reduce abandonment.

Performance and continuous monitoring

Compress your images, load JavaScript per page rather than in a single bundle, and monitor your Core Web Vitals on mobile: every second gained limits abandonment.

Test regularly on real devices, track bounce and abandonment rates by device, and iterate quarterly based on your results.
